Kerr Contractors, Inc. recently completed the first phase of the I-5: Holladay-Marquam Bridge project for ODOT in Portland, Oregon on the Fremont Bridge. The work included the removal and replacement of the existing asphalt pavement for the main bridge segment. The main bridge segment was originally transported by barge up the Willamette River and jacked into place in 1973. Maintenance on the bridge included removing and replacing the top section of pavement, but the original asphalt paving placed over the steel deck the main bridge section, a special polymer mix, was approximately 38 years old. The new paving required over the bridge’s steel deck was a similar modified polymer asphalt that required careful planning and execution to meet the stringent temperature requirements for the asphalt to properly bond to the steel deck of the bridge.

The asphalt removal and replacement was completed in three weekend closures of the south bound lanes of Interstate 405 over the Fremont Bridge heading in to downtown Portland. ODOT’s summary of the work activities is shown here: Read more http://kerrcontractors.com/docs/FactSheet_Summer2011.pdfshapeimage_3_link_0
